A Digital Designer is required to work as a key part of our growing Digital team to design effective, high quality cutting-edge digital design and user experiences across a variety of our websites, mobile sites and apps.

You should have an instinctive understanding of UX/UI, and understand the limitations and possibilities involved and have the ability to interpret this into engaging and commercially effective digital products. Experience of responsive design would be ideal.

You will have bags of creativity and you’ll work well both individually and as part of a team to ensure successful design, development, testing and delivery of the company’s websites and other creative initiatives.

You will be empowered to create great work with freedom to suggest and implement ideas, whilst being flexible and having a can-do approach. You’ll be completely at ease using common toolsets such as Adobe Fireworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, and be highly proficient at writing clean, semantic HTML and CSS. Expert User Interface design skills are a must and additional skills including designing for email, mobile and video are also highly desirable.

Your responsibility will be to gather design requirements and carry them from the idea/concept stage, through wire framing/prototyping into build until completion, which will involve the use of HTML and CSS.

Key skills include but are not limited to:

  • Experience with UI design
  • Exposure to a broad range of software including Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator
  • CSS3 and HTML5 skills
  • Strong portfolio

Purpose of role

Role requirements

The successful candidate will have the product responsibility for all middle- and back-office (MOBO) applications supporting the Stockbrokers business:  a mixture of vendor package solutions, vendor bespoke solutions and in-house bespoke applications.  The technology underlying the applications ranges from Visual Basic, Access and “green screen” character terminals on the desktop underpinned by SQL Server, Ingres and a mainframe batch.

In additional to managing the on-going change and maintenance demand for the applications, a key aspect of the role is to drive the re-architecting of the MOBO infrastructure as part of a strategic architecture rationalization programme that is being initiated in the second half of 2012.  Working in conjunction with Barclays enterprise architects, solution architects and other Wealth & Investment Management technology teams, the successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the architectural redesign and be responsible for its ultimate delivery.

Professional/technical experience

Candidates will have a strong understanding of the trade lifecycle within an investment financial services environment, with particular depth in middle- and back-office operations.  Ideally, the role holder will have experience delivering solutions on the Microsoft technology stack (VB 6, Access, SQL Server 2008), Ingres (Actian) and ABF on Linux and large scale mainframe batch processing platforms. Complete familiarity with the full software development lifecycle is expected.

Managerial experience

Development Managers at VP level should have experience of managing multiple geographically distributed teams of 5-10 members in size.  The successful candidate will be comfortable providing coaching and mentoring, setting meaningful objectives and providing constructive, timely and specific feedback.
