Scottish Developers are pleased to announce that DunDDD 2013 will take place on Saturday 23rd November in the Queen Mother Building of the University of Dundee.
This will be the 3rd DunDDD built on the popular foundation of the Developer! Developer! Developer! conference series which has spread to all corners of the UK and the international arena. DDD conferences are community-run days where passionate and enthusiastic people come together to learn, share ideas, and to network within the many hubs of the development community. Best of all DDD events are free to everyone.
This year DunDDD will be featuring an entire track dedicated to Data Science.
Call for speakers
We are looking for sessions relating to all aspects of development from the code and technology level through to methodology and theory. DDD conferences are about sharing experience regardless of skill level so even if you have never spoken publicly before, are still studying at college or university and if you feel you have something to say, we would love to hear from you.
Sessions should be no more than an hour in length. Although we do recommend that you plan for at least 10 minutes of questions or discussion.

Participation Request: Seb is looking for those planning on attending to submit what you feel are examples of good or bad tests. You can submit them to badtestgoodtest@claysnow.co.uk and they may be critiqued during the talk.
Foundational unit testing techniques are often taken for granted, but are an essential underpinning for delivering maintainable software. The tests need to assist software development not hinder it, and to that end need to be flexible, robust, comprehensible and performant. If you find yourself fighting your test suite, then something is wrong.
In this session, we re-examine the basics of a unit test. We will work through a number of examples with continuous input from attendees. Each example will start with a test of questionable quality, and we will work through the issues till we’re happy that it’s as good as we can get it.
Although this session is not specifically about the testability of software, this will necessarily be touched upon as we consider some test cases. Examples will be written in several common languages, but knowledge of all (or any) of them is not a pre-requisite.
About the Speaker
Seb Rose is an independent software developer, trainer and coach based in the UK. He specialises in working with teams adopting and refining their agile practices, with a particular focus on delivering software through the use of examples.
He first worked as a programmer in 1980 writing applications for estate agents and solicitors in compiled BASIC on an Apple II. He has worked with many mainstream technologies since then, for many well-known companies, such as Amazon, IBM, NCR, HBOS, Standard Life and Aegon. He is a regular conference speaker (ACCU, XPDay, Agile North, Developer Day Scotland, Agile on the Beach, Lean Agile Scotland) as well as a contributing author to O’Reilly’s “97 Things Every Programmer Should Know”

Senior Development Manager
Purpose of role
The role of Senior Development Manager is to manage development and delivery across multiple teams, providing a deep understanding of industry best practices born from significant experience of investment banking projects and managing medium to large sized development teams.
Core accountabilities

- Manage task delivery to demanding time and budget constraints.

Role requirements
The successful candidate will have the product responsibility for all middle- and back-office (MOBO) applications supporting the Stockbrokers business: a mixture of vendor package solutions, vendor bespoke solutions and in-house bespoke applications. The technology underlying the applications ranges from Visual Basic, Access and “green screen” character terminals on the desktop underpinned by SQL Server, Ingres and a mainframe batch.
In additional to managing the on-going change and maintenance demand for the applications, a key aspect of the role is to drive the re-architecting of the MOBO infrastructure as part of a strategic architecture rationalization programme that is being initiated in the second half of 2012. Working in conjunction with Barclays enterprise architects, solution architects and other Wealth & Investment Management technology teams, the successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the architectural redesign and be responsible for its ultimate delivery.
Professional/technical experience
Candidates will have a strong understanding of the trade lifecycle within an investment financial services environment, with particular depth in middle- and back-office operations. Ideally, the role holder will have experience delivering solutions on the Microsoft technology stack (VB 6, Access, SQL Server 2008), Ingres (Actian) and ABF on Linux and large scale mainframe batch processing platforms. Complete familiarity with the full software development lifecycle is expected.
Managerial experience
Development Managers at VP level should have experience of managing multiple geographically distributed teams of 5-10 members in size. The successful candidate will be comfortable providing coaching and mentoring, setting meaningful objectives and providing constructive, timely and specific feedback.
